The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN)

A BSN degree is a four-year college degree with a major in nursing. Our liberal arts program is a typical, where students have required general education courses plus required courses in their major. Students take general education courses (math, science, English, etc.) on the partner school campus and take all nursing courses at B-RCN, with clinical experiences (hands-on training) at Blessing Hospital and area health care agencies.

A BSN degree is the starting point of a rewarding career in nursing – the potential is only as great as you can imagine!

  • You are prepared to begin a position in a health care agency, ensuring your employer that you have the best preparation for your new position, including leadership and critical thinking skills.
  • BSN nurses have more opportunity for advancement into supervisory positions and other positions of responsibility because of that preparation.
  • The BSN degree is also necessary to be accepted into training for some specialty fields like nurse anesthetist, midwife, administration, nurse educator, or clinical nurse specialist. Some employers require a BSN degree for certain positions.
  • Many BSN students enroll in graduate education programs to receive their Masters of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner degree, or even a PhD!

There are many exciting opportunities for registered nurses with a BSN degree!

Master of Science in Nursing Degree (MSN)

Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing (BRCN) offers a part-time Master of Science in Nursing program. This part-time program has students enrolling in 6-7 credit hours per semester. Each student is expected to transfer in 3 semester hours of advanced biostatistics (prior to or concurrent with enrollment in Nsg 504), and 6 semester hours of cognate courses. The total number of semester credits needed to graduate equals 42-44 credit hours. Students choosing to complete a scholarly project will have a total of 42 semester credits, and students choosing to complete a Master’s Thesis will have a total of 44 semester credits. Students choose one of two advanced roles: nursing education or nursing administration. Courses are scheduled to facilitate the working student. While faculty may include some asynchronous learning experiences, students are expected to attend all scheduled classes as learning experiences are enhanced by group interaction. At least one practicum must be completed at a different, preferably larger, more metropolitan site to increase diversity of experiences.

BRCN has approval from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Higher Learning Commission. The initial cohort of students (15) began in  Summer of 2007.

Please see our see our Program Catalog or contact our Admissions department for additional information and requirements for the MSN program.
